Zakat
Zakat is an Arabic term that means purification. When we have money in savings that lasts with us for more than a year, we take 2.5% of that savings and give it away to the poor and needy and those categories outlined in the Quran. Zakat al-Fitr is paid as expiation for the sins and mistakes we commit during Ramadan. It is paid as 2.5kg (or 5lbs) of wheat, dates, rice, etc. You may pay the cash value of rice if you like
Sadaqah
Sadaqah is a charity given voluntarily in order to please God. Sadaqah is the term used to describe an act of kindness that is given to someone without the expectation of anything in return. Sadaqah also describes a voluntary charitable act towards others, whether through generosity, love, compassion or faith. These acts are not necessarily physical or monetary. Simple good deeds such as a smile, or a helping hand, are seen as acts of sadaqah
Sadaqah Jariyah
Sadaqah Jariyah is a gift that not only benefits others in this life but also benefits us and our loved ones in the next. (Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, narrated by Muslim) “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge and a child who prays for them.”
